At the risk of branding myself as an idiot, I wanted to make a suggestion:

 

- When replying to a forum message, the "reply" button is located to the lower right of the text box.  

- After submitting a message, there is an option to edit it while it's pending moderation.  If you choose to edit, then the "delete" button is in the same location the reply button was before.

 

Obviously, I have just deleted a post after taking time to edit it.  I'm sure I won't make that mistake again, but perhaps it would be useful to move one button or the other for us visual types?
