Question about one of Lauridsen's "Fire Songs"Date: October 24, 2009
In the fifth of the six "Fire Songs" ("Luci Serene e Chiare") of Morten Lauridsen, there's a subito piano marking in m. 27 (top of page 5) that seems like it could have been intended to be one beat later (on the downbeat of m. 28). Musically, I think it could work in either spot, but I think it's possible that the engravers/typesetters/editors might have misplaced it. If you have an opinion about this specifc spot, kindly share it. Peace, David Topping Replies (2): Threaded | Chronological

We did these over a dozen years ago, so I had to refresh my memory on Nr. 5. I interpreted the sub p where marked, and I think it worked well there - it ensured the dynamic coming back to piano on the next downbeat. Happy to send you our recording if interested (www.ualberta.ca/~mads/)

Thanks for the response, Leonard, and I might take you up on the offer of the recording (partly due to all the other wonderful repertoire on your recording -- I'll contact you privately). As for this specific marking, probably only the composer could say for sure, since it can be made to work either way.
Peace,
David T.
