Volti, founder/artistic director Robert Geary, is a 20-voice professional chorus in San Francisco specializing in new music. Each year Volti sponsors a young composer competition, the Choral Arts Laboratory. One composer will be invited to compose an a cappella work for professional chamber choir for performances in Volti's 2010/11 season. This is a residency program, in which the composer brings a draft or working version of the piece in the fall and works with the chorus, followed by mentoring sessions with Maestro Geary and Volti's Resident Composer Mark Winges. The composer then continues to revise and polish the piece, and returns for further work with Volti the following spring, culminating in premiere performances in two or three Bay Area concerts. Volti will pay travel costs and provide accommodations as necessary.
Postmark deadline for submissions is January 4, 2010. Applicants must not have reached their 35th birthday by January 1, 2010, and must live within the United States. Full details and application form can be found at http://www.voltisf.org/lab.html.
