"Me" TimeDate: November 20, 2009 From one of my favorite blogs - it is that stressful time of the year, isn't it?
Today, Stu Dent wanted to talk to me after class. (You can see it coming, right?) Stu: I can't attend any concerts. I work all the time. Dr. T: Oh? Stu: I'm really busy. I work a lot. Dr. T: (silent) Stu: So I shouldn't have to do the assignment. I'm too busy to go to concerts. I work all the time. Dr. T: That's your choice, but you'll lose 20% of the points for this class. I'm sure you recall that you've known about this assignment since the first day of class. It's also on the syllabus. You've had all semester to complete it. Stu: I know that. But I work in the afternoons. I don't have free time then. I'm so busy. Dr. T, confused: But you don't work in the evenings? Stu: No, but that's my only free time to relax. I need to have that time for me. I need "me time." Dr. T, brightly: Great! Then you'll be able to attend! Stu, growing more frustrated: But I have classes all morning, and I work all afternoon. Evenings are my only "ME" time. It's really important to me to have that time. (Gives vague, random reason why "me time" is necessary.) Dr. T, tiring of conversation but trying to be polite: I can't make accommodations for "relaxing time" without documentation from the ADA office, and we would have needed to have had this conversation months ago with that office, instead of after a deadline has been missed. Stu: Gee, thanks. (Walks away) "Me" time? Huh?
