Recommendations of a good choral recording company

Wondering if anyone has suggestions of who to hire to record our community choir concert -- located in St. Paul/Minneapolis.  We've hired a company before, but they were very inexperienced with the specfics of recording for a 120 voice choir. (They placed the microphone about 6 inches from my head -- distracting, and not at all a good place to get a balance of the choir.  We heard a lot of 1st altos on the recording-- the group directly in front of me.)

Of course, they need to be reasonably priced, as well.

Recommendations?

Thanks-

Jennifer,

I would directly contact some of the other fine choirs in your area.  Many of them record regularly: National Lutheran Choir, The Singers, Exultate, just to name a few.  Many of those ensembles record after their live performances, in a "studio" type setting, but they may be able to direct you to a number of recording professionals who could handle live set up.

Steve Barnett Music Productions is located in Minneapolis. Recording choirs is his speciality.

Absolutely agree about Steve Barnett.  He produced many of the recordings by Chanticleer when my son was singing with them, and is both very good as a producer and very good to work with.  I think one of his latest projects was a new album by Yale's venerable Whiffenpoofs.

To get the best recordings, you really need BOTH an experienced producer--who can be your ears and at the same time make technical decisions--and an experienced recording engineer--who can carry out all the technical matters properly.  And in a live situation you, yourself really can't do either and still do your job as a conductor.  But even in a recording studio, dividing up the repsonsibilities among professionals just makes sense.

All the best,

John

Wildman Music Group in Salt Lake City has a tremendous reputation.  They have done two cd's for me with The Canterbury Singers and Gordon Wildman has also done several recordings in the midwest including projects with the Choirs of St. Olaf's College.  Google Wildman Music Group for contact details.

Jennifer:
The company that I, and most other college directors in the Twin Cities area, have used forever is Mike Wolstad's Encore Productions.  He does a phenomenal  job!  He has a great ear and knows choirs and choral music extremely well.  You can get an example of his work by listening to his recordings of the National Lutheran Choir.  His telephone number is (763) 473-1684.
Sncerely,
Paul Brandvik
