Tree/Growth theme (Upper Voice Advanced Rep)Date: November 23, 2009
Hi all,
I'm developing a program called "Tree of Life" and have a good rep list emerging but I still have some gaps. The theme is not only to be taken literally but as a metaphor for growth. I'm hoping my colleagues may know of some hidden gems. Pieces should be suitable for young women (age 18+) and at least SSA. Here's what I already have:
My Soul, the Tree of Life (music by Elizabeth Poston, text adapted from Yeats' "Two Trees")
Magos a rutafa (Bardos)
Now I Become Myself (G. Walker)
Tree of Life (newly commissioned - music by Jeff Enns, text e.e. cummings)
Thanks for your wisdom!

"Run, Children, Run" by fellow Canadian Stephen Hatfield....text is "Run, Children, Run, I got a right to the Tree of Life" -- it's available for Treble voices, and is a "field yell" -- very interesting, different piece. You can hear it on-line on Hatfield's website. www.stephenhatfield.com

There is a good setting of the first few verses of Psalm 1, "Blessed is the man",
that gently sets the first verses, including the verse "He is like a tree, planted by streams..."

Have you run across Michael Torke's "Song of Ezekiel"? Here's the text (taken from http://www.boosey.com/pages/teaching/catalogue/musicFinder_detail.asp?musicdetailsID=25032). It's a very exciting piece.
TEXT And all the trees of the field shall know that I, the Lord, Bring low the high tree, lift high the lowly tree, Wither up the green tree, and make the withered tree bloom. As I, the Lord, have spoken, so will I do. I, too, will take the crest of the cedar, from its topmost branches tear off a tender shoot, And plant it on a high and lofty mountain; on the mountain heights of Israel I will plant it. It shall put forth branches and bear fruit, and become a majestic cedar. Birds of every kind shall dwell beneath it, every winged thing in the shade of its boughs. – Ezekiel 17:24, 22-23

Whitacre has a nice christmas setting called "Little Tree", might fit very well with your program
This setting is SATB, for some reason I recall seeing it performed by a treble choir, so I want to say that an all treble voicing exists.
