Date: November 26, 2009
The Voices of Lee will be among eight a cappella singing groups competing for a prize of $100,000 and an Epic Records/Sony recording contract on “The Sing-Off” beginning Dec. 14 on NBC.
Voices of Lee Director Danny Murray said Monday the vocal ensemble auditioned Sept. 17 in Atlanta during the week of the group’s 15th anniversary celebration.
“It was a very, very busy week,” he said. “We didn’t know if we would even be able to audition.”
Groups were restricted to 10 members when the Voices auditioned. The number was later raised to 12, but the 10 Voices were already selected.
“We were happy with that,” he said.
The Lee University vocalists learned Monday afternoon they will compete with three other collegiate groups and four professionals vocal bands. The collegiate singers are Beelzebubs from Tufts University, Boston; Noteworthy of Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah; and The SoCals of the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. The four professional groups are in the form of male ensembles Face, Boulder, Colo.; Nota, San Juan, Puerto Rico; all female Maxx Factor, Baltimore and Solo, a mixed ensemble from Omaha, Neb.
Murray said the Sing-Off is a true competition in the sense the local university students will work outside their comfort zones. The singers will be asked to sing popular songs of various genre.
