Strategic Planning

Hello,

I am the president of a chamber choir and orchestra, and our organization has been going through a period of  rapid growth.  I am currently trying to prepare a strategic planning session to create a 3 year plan that is critical toward providing the administrative support and infrastructure that will allow us to continue growing.  I am fairly new to the process, and would welcome any suggestions or ideas on how to get the most out of the planning session.  Thank you.

Connect with Chorus America (www.chorusamerica.org). Their resources for these kind of challenges are superb!

Donna- join Chorus America asap. I did, and it is the best investment of a few dollars for the support and advice you and I need. I founded a new community chorus in El Paso, Texas. I am rehearsing and still seeking singers, probably like everyone else is doing.
The info I received from Chorus America is excellent.
Chorus America was recommended to me by the executive director of a fine community chorus with a successful perfomance tradition that is fifty years old!  So I now recommend Chorus America to you.

Dear Ms. Bojus:

1) The suggestion that you join Chorus America is a good one--after doing
so, you can speak directly to the heads of the various departments, e.g.,
we spoke with Catherine Dehoney, head of development, about ideas
re: grants/fundraising--very helpful.

2) The best thing you can do now is contact other successful choruses
throughout the nation and request an electronic copy of their strategic
plan--I am on the board of the Detroit Concert Choir, which just embarked
on the creation of a strategic plan--I got strategic plans from five different
choirs, three of them major groups--in this way you can see the ideas
and goals they consider important--and get some good models for your
own final plan--call the executive director or board president of these
groups and simply say that you would like to see their strategic plans--
just to use as models--I found every person to whom I spoke most
cooperative, and proud of the work they had done on behalf of their
ensemble.

3) You might consider making your strategic plan a three-year plan,
renewable annually--i.e., if your first plan covers 2010/11/12, during
the first year craft a plan for 2013--so you do the heavy lifting at the
beginning (creating the three-year plan), then each year thereafter
you are just creating a one-year plan--in this way you continue to
refresh your view of the future of your group.

Best wishes for your work.
