RCCNY on Prairie Home Companion
Date: December 8, 2009
Location: New York, USA
Choir type: Chamber Choirs and Vocal Ensembles
On Saturday, December 19, between 6:00 and 8:00pm, EST, The Russian Chamber Chorus of NY will join Garrison Keillor and his gang in the NPR broadcast, live from Town Hall in New York City. The chorus, conducted by Nikolai Kachanov, will perform selections from its concerts of December 13 and 16, previously announced on ChoralNet. Musically sensitive Garrison Keillor will most likely respond to the varied sounds the singers produce. Kachanov's knowledge of Russian choral music and its performance practice leads him to require the singers to use their voices differently, according to the style of each piece.
Audience members for "A Prairie Home Companion" number about four million, since it is repeated on Sunday on various NPR stations (and can also be heard on the Web). Although the chorus has performed numerous times in Carnegie Hall and other large concert venues in New York, this appearance will bring its repertoire of Russian music--sacred and secular, classical and folk-- to a much larger audience.
