Renaissance Composers

What are some good Renaissance songs for a high school choir?

Check out a the repertoire lists and public domain editions at the above site. The "Choral Treasure Hunts" were sessions presented by choral music educators for music educators (not selling anything!). There are many examples and free editions of Renaissance music appropriate for various levels. Though I certainly agree with John Howell, below, I hope that these resources can help you get started in this and future repertoire searches. By the way, high school and middle school students respond very positively to Renaissance music! Best wishes, RRW

Renaissance must be in the air! I just answered another question with these pieces:
  • Palestrina: Sicut cervus
  • Palestrina: Alma redemptoris mater
  • Vittoria: Ave maria
  • di Lasso: Matona mia cara
  • Morales: O vos omnes
With a good high school choir and patience on the part of the director, these can be very rewarding. The Choral Public Domain Library (www.cpdl.org) has a huge list of Renaissance music, much of which you can download as a .pdf at no cost. If you don't like it, or its above your group's abilities, delete it. No harm, no foul!

Good luck!

Well, there are many wonderful works with different grades of difficulty. I can sugest one that is very beautiful and simple (if that thing could be predicated from any renaissene music, lol) and it is this: "O bone Jesu", by M.A. Ingegneri (former attr. to Palestrina). And there are many english works too, by Tallis, Downland, etc.

What voicing? And what approximate level are your singers? I can help you with this if you want to email me privately.
