Choral Music in TexasDate: February 9, 2010
HI! My husband is possibly being transferred to Dallas. I am certified in Illinois and have taught here 19 years. Can anyone tell me:
1. What are the Dallas public schools like?
2. Are the choral music programs are as amazing as I have heard?
3. What are the salary ranges for public school teachers in the Dallas/FW area?
4. Anyone one much about certification there as compared to Illinois?
Thanks to any and all who can help me with my questions. Only been to Dallas once and loved the ribs.....this could be a whole new world!

The public school music programs in Texas are generally regarded as some of the strongest in the country. If you come here, you will need a mentor who has taught choral music in Texas to help you learn to negotiate thru the contests and individual auditions your students will be expected to attend. Suburban districts are stronger that the inner city ones. Good suburban districts in the Dallas area include Plano, Richardson, McKinney, Garland and Mesquite (that's just off the top of my head - others are great too!) Salary ranges are $40,000-about 60,000 depending on experience. You are paid by years of experience teaching. You will need to certified in Texas to teach here, but there are ways to do emergency certification.Good luck!

I will concur will Mary Jane on that issue. I was a student in an inner-city school district (FWISD) and under the direction of Mrs. Sherylynn Porter at Southwest High School. Our choir program was in the dumps before she came, and now, it is one of the stronger ones in the district, but not as strong as the suburban areas. Plano has a very strong choral music program, but the others listed are "up to par" with Plano as well. There are so many options for you; I hope you will find one that will fit your needs/desires.
