Choral Conduction Courses in 2011Date: February 22, 2010
I live in Australia, and may be able to apply for a scholarship to study overseas in 2011, so I'm looking for a 3-4 month course, in Europe or US.
I am very experienced in leading community and school choirs, including African-American Gospel, African, and Pop styles, but looking to 'up-skill' as it were.
Many thanks for any suggestions.

Hi, Stuart. I understand what you're asking, but for the most part what you'll find in the U.S. are either specific Workshops, usually but not always in our summer (roughly June-August), and seldom lasting anywhere close to that long. OR, degree programs consisting of a number of "courses" at colleges or universities, which require application and admission to the degree program itself, and at the Masters level usually take 1 or 2 years to complete.
But if there are other possibilities, I'm sure others on the list will tell you about them and make suggestions.
All the best,
John

Mr. Davis - I would suggest that you get the names of several outstanding choral conductors, perhaps retired but not necessarily and ask to "apprentice" with them for the time that you are here. There may be a professional or semi professional choral group that you could sing and study with at the same time. I'm sure that my colleagues would have numerous suggestions.
Good luck.

I would second Dan's comment, and recommend that you contact our mutual mentor, Dr. Charlene Archibeque. Named a "legend" at the last national ACDA convention, Charlene is a brilliant conductor and teacher (Dan and I both sang in her 1987/88 Choraliers) -- and I know that she does individual coaching. She lives near San Jose, California, and her email is chara(a)pacbell.net. For more info, check out her website: www.charlenearchibeque.com
