Hi,
I would like to do PhD in Choral Conducting, but it is hard to find such a possibilitry anywhere! Currently I am studying at Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff (UK) and I would likte to continue my education in the US since the best choirs are there...can anybody advise me something? I am currently doing MA in Music Performance and I have already one MA in Choral Conducting from Poland..Many thanks!!!! Marysia:)

Maria: It's unclear whether you mean a doctorate in choral conducting, or specifically a Ph.D as opposed to a DMA. Many U.S. universities offer the doctorate, although more and more the DMA is replacing the PhD because the PhD traditionally requires a full dissertation and the DMA is more performance oriented.
One option might be to take a PhD in musicology, with a minor in choral conducting. That's what I did, after a Masters in choral conducting (although I did not complete the PhD).
I wish you all the best in finding the best fit for what you are after.

Hi,
Many thanks for you advice. Yes, I am European citzen does it mean that as a student I would not be eligible to work in US? Can you also tell me what is the exact difference between DMA and PhD? There is no such a division in Poland and in th UK ...

You must look requirements for the doctorate for exact
differences in DMA/DM/PhD requirements of each school. However, as
John wrote, DMA (and DM) are more performance-oriented degree, and
you probably need to give more recitals and spend less time for
research class than PhD.

In general, you are not allowed to be "employed" in the US as a student visa holder, and you may not work as a independent contractor (freelance) either. There are exceptions for this rule, and one of them would be approved campus jobs (and that probably is the only exception you are qualified eventually).
In order to prevent international students working with student visa, you must provide the evidence that you (or your financial provider) have at least the amount of one year of tuition and living expense when you apply to the visa. The amount that you must prove to show in order to apply visa would be different for each school and your scholarship status. Tuition would be anywhere between $8,000 to $20,000 and living expense would be $5,000 - $10,000. If you get a full scholarship from the school, the document (it is called i-20) will say your yearly expense would be your living expense only. For details, PLEASE spend time at
here. In addition, each accredited university
and college has international student advisers. If you are
interested in studying in the US, and find a school you are
interested in, contact not only music department and professors,
but also the international student advisers.

I am assuming that you are a citizen of European countries and would come to US with student visa. In that case, I STRONGLY recommend you to look into requirements and regulations of student visa (especially, financial and employment/working regulations).
