Renowned composer and recipient of the National Medal of Arts
MORTEN LAURIDSEN joins Volti for two very special concerts, May 14 and 15, playing the piano part in performance of his song cycle Nocturnes Volti considers it a privilege and an honor to have Morten Lauridsen as the first Composer in Residence for the Choral Institute, our educational outreach program for High School singers. Last October, 100 student singers and their choir conductors spent an intensive weekend working on Nocturnes with him and with Bob Geary and members of Volti. On Friday, May 14, we welcome Dr. Lauridsen back for performances which are further enriched by his artistry as a pianist. Also on the program are a repeat performance of a 2009 Volti commission, Donald Crockett's Daglarym/My Mountains, and the premieres of two new Volti commissions, by young composers Robin Estrada and Ted Hearne.
The same concert program will be repeated Saturday May 15, without the Choral Institute Choirs, with Volti only (20 voices, SATB, professional chamber choir). Both concerts will be preceded by a chat with Morten Lauridsen at 7:40.
Morten Lauridsen’s choral works have established him as one of the most performed living composers in the country and his music receives many international performances as well. He was named an “American Choral Master” by the National Endowment for the Arts in 2005, and in 2007 was awarded the National Medal of Arts for “his compositions of radiant choral works combining musical beauty, power, and spiritual depth that have thrilled audiences worldwide.” May 14, 8 PM First Congregational Church, Berkeley with Choral Institute Choirs: Acalanes HS, Head-Royce School, Ecco from Piedmont East Bay Children’s Choir, and San Francisco School of the Arts May 15, 8 PM St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, San Francisco The intimate version of the same program (without the Choral Institute choirs) WWW.VOLTISF.ORG Tickets $25 in advance/$30 at the door Seniors & Students $20 advance/$25 door $10 Student Rush (door only) if available
