The mission of the ACDA is to inspire excellence in choral music through education, performance, composition, and advocacy.

Communities, Communication, and Collaboration

I hear these three words all the time:  Community, Communication, Collaboration
Ours is a collaborative art, is it not?  We form communities of choral singers and use our communication skills to enhance the lives of singers and audiences.  It is worth noting the Latin roots of the word:
"Communication" is a word with a rich history. From the Latin communicare, meaning to impart, share, or make common, it entered the English language in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. The key root is mun- (not uni-), related to such words as "munificent," "community," "meaning," and Gemeinschaft. The Latin munus has to do with gifts or duties offered publicly--including gladitorial shows, tributes, and rites to honor the dead.
For months, the leadership of ACDA and ChoralNet have brainstormed different ways to enhance the ability of the world's choral communities to communicate and collaborate online.  Tim Sharp spoke about it here and Allen introduced the changes yesterday.  We are making our first steps towards a realization of that vision with the new look and functionality of the ChoralNet website.
ChoralNet President Jim Feiszli and I are unveiling the new look and functionality at the ACDA Leadership Conference in Chicago this week.
It is an exciting time for ChoralNet and ACDA.  Please test out the new "Communities" and let us know what you think.

This is an excellent way to help people focus on the specific issues they have, while the general blog enables us to encounter things from outside our immediate concerns.  All very good.  A suggestion, though: given that the issue cuts across the needs of various choral groups - church, college, professional - wouldn't it be a good idea to have a community discussing funding opportunities and fundraising ideas?

Absolutely, Lee!

Why don't you start that community?

"Funding Opportunities and Fundraising Ideas"

I promise to join!

Can anyone suggest a new community to add?  I just joined the community chorus community, since my main choir is a community choir BUT it is also a chamber choir, with its own problems.  I would love a chamber choir/vocal ensemble community.  And not to get the men-folk riled up, but occassionaly we have women's issues come up, so perhaps a women's group would be good.  And, Philip and David and James have started communities based in their states--how can we encourage our own state to to step up?
I do like this idea and my mind is racing with possibilities....thank you all for all your hard work and vision!

Marie - Absolutely!
Add a new community!
And . . . I'm likely speaking to your state leader today at the ACDA Leadership Conference in Chicago.  I'll be recommending that they begin a state community - and maybe even replace their state ACDA website and/or newsletter with the functionality we have developed here!

Hope you have fun in My Town.  It is a really Happening place if you're downtown in the Loop but don't try the barbequed turkey legs at Taste of Chicago.  It seems like a good idea but you'll thank me later.
Thank you for speaking with our state leader.  I checked out your state communities here and they seem to be the start of something  that could be really good.

I had a Fish Taco (tilapia) with the extra hot sauce at the Taste of Chicago.  Was really good, not all that hot!
The presentation went well about the communities and I think we've got a great tool here at ChoralNet.
