OCDA Spring Board Meeting
Saturday, March 27, 2004 University of Oklahoma – Norman, OK Meeting was called to order by President Steve Curtis. The treasurer’s report was given by Beth Berkenbile. Lynnette McKeithan gave a report on Junior High All-State. Dr. Paul Torkelson will conduct and possible music selections were shared at the meeting. Lynette will update the rules and send them out to the membership. Brent Ballweg reminded all that articles for the next issue of Sooner Style were due by April 1. Steve Curtis reported on the SWACDA Board meeting. Our Sooner Style newsletter received kudos at that meeting. Jan Hanson reported on Director of Distinction status. There are 4 nominees from which 3 finalists will be chosen. Their names and bios will go into the next Sooner Style and ballots will go out soon after. Steve Curtis distributed the list of Board candidates for the next election. Stephania Abell reported that some members are unaware of how the All-State chairs, committee, and conductors are chosen. Members should be informed that their representatives will take suggestions for those positions. Motion to add to All-State rules the following: One teacher from each school site (not district) will be required to work the All-State auditions all day. Other teachers from the same school site will be required to work while at the auditions. Motion was made by Kathy, seconded by Stephania. There was discussion on the question of director involvement in the All-State auditions. If a school has multiple directors, are all expected to participate? Motion carried and will be included in the new entry form. There was discussion on the listing of teachers and schools in the OCDA All-State programs. Teachers should be made aware that the teacher names listed in the program come from the entry forms. It was also suggested that the city name, as well as school name, be included in the listing. The board expressed its appreciation for Jimmy Zinn’s contribution to our organization and will send a note to that effect. There was discussion on increasing attendance at the summer convention, especially among the church membership. Several incentive suggestions were made such as registration price breaks for first-time attendees ($55 pre-registration, $65 on-site), a 2-for-1 deal (when one is a previous attendee, the other is a new member to OCDA or a member who hasn’t been at the convention in the past 5 years and the registrations are sent in together), and attendance prizes such as music, next year’s registration fee, All-State or CTSWS rehearsal CD’s, or season tickets for an arts organization such as Canterbury Choral Society or Tulsa Opera. Other suggestions for the summer convention: Round Tables where 1st-year teachers can meet with representatives from the All-State and CTSWS committees and learn about deadlines, rules, and have their questions answered. A session for All-State judges to promote consistency in judging. Recognition of Chuck Chapman for his years of service and to congratulate him on his retirement. Meeting was adjourned. |
