OCDA Executive Board Meeting
First Baptist Church, OKC
March 27, 2010

I.  Charla Dedmon called the meeting to order at 12:15 p.m.  Members present were:  Charla Dedmon, Darla Eshelman, Lisa Cullison, Ramona Cummings, Brent Ballweg, Rebecca Lindley, Julie Hester, Darin Chapin, Doris Lambert, Mary Susan Whaley, Barbara Meyer, Kim Childs.

II.  Minutes from the January board meeting were read and approved.   Motion made to accept by Julie Hester, seconded by Kim Childs.  Minutes approved.

III.  Committee Reports
A.    Treasurer’s Report:  Ramona Cummings reported a balance of $33, 500.
B.    Sooner Style:  Web-Master Brent Ballweg asked that all board members provide  articles for Sooner Style as soon as possible. 
C.    Rebecca Lindley reported on the 2011 JH Mixed Chorus.  A written report was provided, detailing Dr. Julie Yu’s proposed repertoire list:  Ritmo (Dan Davison), Die Mainacht (Brahms/Frankenpohl), Pal Pa Haugen (arr. Bradley Ellingboe), Stars I Shall Find (Victor C. Johnson), Worthy to Be Praised (Byron J. Smith), Over the Rainbow (Audrey Snyder). The question was raised as to how audition pieces are chosen.  Darin Chapin stated that the most difficult pieces are chosen.
D.   Rebecca Lindley reported for Nancy Murray regarding the 2011 JH Treble Chorus, to be conducted by Dr. Joshua Oppenheim.  The proposed repertoire list is as follows:  It Takes a Village (Joan Szymko), Three Quotes by Mark Twain (Andrea Ramsey), Hello, Girls (Lloyd Pfautsch), Lullaby (Huff), Song of Ruth (David Childs).
E.   All-State HS Jazz report was given by Charla Dedmon for Tony Gonzales.  Michelle Weir will be the 2011 conductor.  A committee has been charged with updating the jazz choir rules within the OCDA by-laws.  Once this process is completed the membership will vote regarding the changes.    Jim Graves will conduct the OCDA teacher’s jazz choir.
F.  Repertoire and Standards Reports
1.  All-Collegiate Chorus:  Kim Childs reported that the collegiate honor choir has 80 voices, with 9 universities and colleges represented.  Rehearsals have gone well and working with clinician David Childs has been a positive experience.  Next year’s all-collegiate honor chorus dates will be  March 25-26, 2011, location TBA.
2.  Children’s Chorus:  Lisa Cullison reported that this year’s festival will host 296 children representing 8 schools and communities from around the state.  April 17, 2010 is the scheduled date for the performance.  Edmond North HS Performing Arts Center has agreed to host the event.   
T-shirts are being printed by Gandy Ink in Texas (for every 50 t-shirts, 10 are free).  Darla Eshelman will serve as clinician.  The performance will be at 3 :30.
3.  Community Choirs:  Doris Lambert has sent e-mails out to community choir directors but has not received any feedback.  Board members were asked to share any names of community choirs and/or directors we are aware of.  Doris was given the 2009 Educator in the Arts Award which was presented to her by the Lawton Arts and Humanities Council and the City of Lawton.  Congratulations Doris!
4.  Church:  Charla reported that Mark previously suggested using the United States Postal Training Center for future conventions and board meetings. The board will possibly go tour the facilities during the summer.
5.  Jazz Choirs-Tony Gonzales:  no report provided at this time.
6.  MS & JH-Randa Mitchell:  no report provided at this time.
7.  Two-Year College Choirs-Mary Susan Whaley:  Working to possibly bring back a two-year college honor choir. 

8.  Women’s Choirs: Julie Hester reported that all is going well.

9.  Youth & Student Activities-Mark Lucas:  no report provided.

IV.Unfinished Business
A.2010 Summer Convention (July 11-13, 2010) at the University of Oklahoma:  Clinicians are Timothy Selig, Cheryl Lavender (tentatively), Oklahoma composers (Z. Randall Stroope, Patti Drennan, Darla Eshelman, Cristi Miller,) and Gail Simpson (Retirement tips).  The board meeting will be on July 11 at 5:00pm.   The board wrap-up meeting will be July 13 at the end of the convention.  Julie Hester reported that the Cherokee National Youth Choir has been invited to perform on the concert following the banquet at this summer’s convention.  We are waiting on a confirmation from the conductor, Mary Kay Henderson.                                                               

B.It was confirmed that Ralph Duncan is the male choir R & S choir, and Becky Martin is rep for 
show choirs.

C.Honor Choir Rotation
Rebecca Lindley is presently the chair, Lisa Cullison will follow her. 

D.2011  All-OCDA Honor Choir Festival:  Jan. 13-15

E.2011 Summer Convention
Frank F.  Eychaner (Colorado Christian University) has offered to be a clinician at one of
our summer conventions.   The board agreed to consider looking into this possibility. 

Darin suggested Bradley & Beth Holmes from Miliken University.  His emphasis is Senior High and hers is elementary & middle school. 

Darin also suggested a vocal health clinician and perhaps looking into the Voice Network .

F.All-State Jazz issue from January 2010 will be worked on by committee, and brought to the
        membership for a vote at the summer convention.

IV.New Business
A.Vendors-Brent Ballweg reported all is well with vendors for the convention.

B.Board Nominees
Elected Positions:
NW representative - Melissa Faulkoner , Paula Kiner
SE representative - Darin Chapin, ?

R & S Positions:
Boy Choir - Casey is in his first term and needs to be contacted regarding board member attendance
Community - Doris Lambert agreed to serve a second term
Jazz - Tony Gonzales  agreed to serve a second term
Music & Worship -Dan from Carbondale Assembly of God, Tulsa is a possibility
Senior High - Jan Smith and Steve Maison were suggested
Women - Julie Hester agreed to serve a second term
Ethnic -
Collegiate - Kim Childs agreed to serve a second term

C.Miscellaneous
Brent read the nomination for a director of distinction.  The board unanimously approved that the nominee will be presented with this award at the 2010 summer convention.

Charla congratulated Brent Ballweg on being elected as SWACDA President-Elect.  Congratulations Brent, we are proud of you! 

Charla suggested considering an executive director position for OCDA (similar to what Jerry Huffer does for OMEA).  The board was asked to think about this possibility. Recognition was given to Ramona Cummings for her outstanding services to the board, and it was suggested that she be considered for this type of position.  Ramona stated she would love to do something like this when she retires.

A commissioned piece for OMEA was discussed.  Charla will contact Stephanie Abel regarding commissioning a composer for 2012, since it is likely too late for 2011.
