DMA programs with a strong conducting technician teacher

Hello all...

I know questions about DMA recommendations have been posted more times than we can count, but I have a more specific query.  I'm interested in finding a doctoral program whose director places a strong emphasis on gestural technique.

Thoughts/ideas?

Andrew,

Take a look at James Madison University (I'm doing my DMA here, now) where we do weekly lessons on Gestural technique, interpretation as well as GVT, and work with a choir about 2-3 times a week on average.

also, look at Florida State University and Indiana University (these were on my top 3 list, and I chose JMU due to the amount of Conducting I get to do)

If you would like more info on JMU-I can send you some!

I understand exactly what you're asking, Andrew, but let me suggest that a really good conducting menor is going to concentrate on what YOU may need most to work on, rather than teaching a generic course.  I was lucky to have a great conducting teacher, and although I already had the basics I needed work on EVERYTHING!!!

In my experience, gestural technique has to grow out of the music, so it is understanding the music in depth that is the most fundamental requirement.

All the best,
John

Bill Weinert at Eastman is terrific.

Don Neuen - UCLA.
I got my MM in 2004.
I've conducted many orchestra/chorus pieces and the orchestra members always say, "You're so easy to follow and we know where we are because your getsure is so clear".  It's all because of Neuen.

Make sure you consider Timothy Stalter at The University of Iowa.  I'm finishing my DMA in choral conducting there now, and those of us who come out of that program are very satisfied with our experience and preparation there.  Both instrumentalists and singers love his conducting and teaching.

I'm sorry to be so late in posting--summer, and all.  I understand Don V. Moses was quite a technician.  I believe several conductors currently at major universities studied with him.  That may help you narrow your search.
