SATB with cello

I am building a choral program at a new private Christian high school.   I have about 40 singers (90% beginning), but have two FABULOUS cello players.   Any repertoire ideas to incorporate my cellists (one also plays double bass).  THANKS!

the Kol Nedrei is breathtaking and a crowd fav for Jewish communities. It's the opening text of the Yom Kippur liturgy. The only downside is the tenor/bar. soloist has to be very adept. This not an easy sing for that part (cantor)

Hey Rebecca,
Jay Rouse's arrangement of "Come Ye Sinners Poor and Needy" is a breathtaking piece with a beautiful cello part. I've heard it done with both a 50+ voice High School group that was over half beginners and with a 14 voice church choir of moderate experience.

O My Luve's Like a Red, Red Rose by Rene Clausen is a great piece. It has cello and violin.

I Surrender All

Arranged by Steve Potts. SATB. Daybreak Choral Series. 12 pages. Published by Hal Leonard (HL.8743624).

This beloved hymn of humble submission takes on a fresh new meaning in this intimate setting. The piano accompaniment is sensitive while the optional cello will add a poignant touch. Also incorporates Where He Leads Me with great effect. Warm and worshipful. Audio available on Daybreak BonusTrax CD #08743775.

Hello:
I strongly suggest that you consider "Out of the Depths" from the Rutter Requiem.  Great cello part with chorus!
Good luck.

May I suggest you look at  the arrangement of  "He's Gone Away" on the website www.deanrishelmusic.com.  You can hear a performance (with electronic-keyboard-cello, unfortunately) and see most of the pdf.

I have two works that fit your requirements -- Walden Recessional, which sets text from the final pages of Thoreau's masterpiece, and Mary's First Lullaby, which examines Christ's birth from Mary's perspective as a new mother.  Mary's First Lullaby is available from Yelton Rhodes Music -- here's a link to the SATB Holiday sampler for this year:

Walden Recessional is available directly from my website:

Rebecca -  As my daughter plays cello with the Las Vegas Philharmonic, and as I've got a little church choir, I'd be very happy to compose or arrange something for SATB, two cellos and piano, without charge.  If you're interested, let me know what kind of piece you're looking for, or what piece in the public domain you have an interest in.

When it comes to choirs with beginning singers, I'm always hawking my "Father, Grant Us Peace" (SATB a cappella), which I wrote at the request of a high school choir director who wanted something her beginners could master which was nevertheless beautiful enough to instill confidence and satisfaction in them.  She had very good success with this piece, an original work composed entirely in seconds.  Its step-wise motion is an excellent introduction to sight reading.  Take a look at it on my web-site at www.musicbyglade.com.

There is also Knut Nystedt's Stabat Mater for solo cello and SATB. It is lovely, but not easy.

Canadian composer Imant Raminsh has a beautiful piece for choir & cello called In the Shadow of Evening Rocks, composed for a BC Choral Federation conference event. I don't know if his publisher (Boosey&Hawkes) has published it yet. If not, I could help you track it down.

Aha, I just found it:

(SATB and Piano). By Imant Raminsh (1943-). SATB. Conductor's Choice. 22 pages. Boosey & Hawkes #M051470891. Published by Boosey & Hawkes (HL.48004788).

The inspired retrospective text makes hidden allusions to landmarks well known to the inhabitants of the city of Nelson, British Colombia, but it can be read and understood in a more universal way as well. The inclusion of a solo cello as a sort of instrumental narrator and an optional children's choir, in addition to the SATB choir and piano, offer an interesting, rich palette of tone colors.

Last year, during Lent, my choir performed Joel Raney's arrangement of O Sacred Head Now Wounded for satb choir and cello. It is very effective and is published by Hope C 5557.

I'm a professional cellist and felt the part was poorly written for the cello, not the notes but the use of treble clef in a low range that made it confusing. I asked for permission to redo the part. If you need my part I can send it.

There is an arrangement of Bach's Crucifixus from the B minor mass set for cello, organ, and choir.  The vocal parts are demanding but if you've got a strong group they could do it.
Additionally Lloyd Larson has a lovely setting of "He Never Said a Mumbalin' Word" for cello and SATB choir, with piano accompaniment.

Raminsh In The Night We Shall Go In - ravishingly beautiful.

Dear Rebecca,

I strongly recommend Ralph Vaughn Williams Fantasia on Christmas Carols.  The carols are not the same old ones, and while a few pages are tricky, overall it's not too bad.  I did it with a young college choir.

Ray

Look at:
"Were you There"  Haan - satb, piano/organ, cello; also the "Benedictus" from Karl Jenkins' "The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace" - my choir loved singing this last season!
