Advocacy for music programs in the public school systems!Date: August 18, 2010
I am a music education major. I am creating lesson plans to teach students ways to advocate for the music programs during a time of a declining economy and many budget cuts. If anyone has any ideas of ways to persuade non-music individuals, I would love to hear all opinions!

Rebekah: Be sure to check on the ChoralNet, ADCA, and MENC websites. And try to track down the Carnegie Commission Report on the Schools from the latish '60s. I remember my parents--both music educators--quoting something like, "Schools must concentate on the basics, and the arts are basic."
All the best,
John

Rebekah,
John's advice is great. You are welcome to visit an article I wrote for the Westmont magazine at this link: http://blogs.westmont.edu/magazine/2009/03/20/better-minds-through-music. It is precisely the kind of persuasive piece that you are looking for. Also, here is brief bibliography that may be helpful. The studies cited are available on the MENC advocacy page found at this link: http://www.menc.org/resources/view/music-education-advocacy-central. The Levitin book is quite compelling.
