Will,

You might want to check the repertoire of Antonin Rejcha (Anton Reicha)  that has been conducted and recorded by Lubomir Matl.   Reicha succeeded Mehul as professor of counterpoint and fugue at the Paris Conservatory in 1818.  He became a naturalized French citizen in 1829 and was named a Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur in 1831.

His choral/orchestral works, according to the notes that accompany Matl's recording of "Der Neue Psalm," all reflect the stormy events of the time.  There is the Requiem (Missa Pro Defunctis), which some believe was written to honor the thousands who died during the Napoleonic wars.  There is also Der Neue Psalm ( an extended prayer for peace), a Te Deum, and a work based on Gottfried August Bürger's ballad "Lenore."

Also, Berlioz's setting of La Marseillaise is powerful!
