Do altos quite often sing the tenor part if their voices are too low for alto.

I have just become musical director of a group of singers who wish to perform music from the shows.  I have introduced them to part singing and developing technique.
one member can not cope with singing the alto part.  She has a very strong low voice and I have asked her to sing with the tenors.  I get the feeling this is totally alien to her and that she sees it as an insult.
Can anyone give me any examples of women singing the tenor part and strengthening my claim that it is most acceptable in many singing groups.?
