The Holy Myrrhbearers Diocesan Women’s Choir will appear in concert on Sunday, February 6th at 2PM at the Synodal Cathedral of the Mother of God of the Sign. This is the 92nd musical concert under the artistic direction of Princess Elena N. Wolkonsky, which benefits the restoration of the landmark Synod building on Carnegie Hill (Baker Mansion).
The concert is entitled: Pilgrimage of Praise: A Musical Journey Through the Liturgical Year. The program will feature liturgical musical highlights of the entire festal cycle, including works by Kastalsky, Chesnokov, Trubachev, as well as by contemporary composers.
Although the performed selections are in Church Slavonic, the HMWC never fails to provide their audiences with handouts which include not only full translations into English, but also related background notes on liturgical meaning, composers and history of the music being presented. In this manner, the HMWC uses the beautiful sound of Russian Orthodox music as an inspiring musical message to all.
All seats are $25, and all proceeds benefit the Synod Restoration Fund.
This performance is dedicated to the memory of the distinguished émigré hymnographer Valeria K. Hoecke (1904 – 1985), on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of her repose.
