Young Vocalists Competition - sponsored by Kalamazoo Bach Festival

The Kalamazoo Bach Festival is pleased to sponsor the 11th annual Young Vocalists Competition on April 16, 2011, and invites voice students to enter.  Only the first 40 applicants will be eligible to compete, so please enter early.  The purpose of the competition is to encourage the study and performance of vocal music by young musicians.

The competition will be held on Saturday, April 16, 2011, at Kalamazoo College, Kalamazoo, Michigan.
 
There will be two adjudicators: Susan Anthony, internationally acclaimed opera singer, and Richard Fracker, also an acclaimed opera singer and Associate Professor of Voice, Michigan State University College of Music. 
 
At least three finalists in each division, High School and College, will be invited to perform for 10 minutes each in the:
     YOUNG VOCALISTS CONCERT
     SATURDAY, APRIL 30, 2011; 3:00 P.M.
     KALAMAZOO COLLEGE
 
The Kalamazoo Bach Festival will accept the first 40 applications with the goal of 20 per division: High School and College. 
            College Division: must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate student, and not exceed 23 years of age as of April 30, 2011.
            High School Division: must be currently enrolled in High School.
 
Entrants in the College Division must prepare one song from each of the following categories for a total of three songs.
            1. One 20th or 21st Century art song by an American, British, or Canadian composer sung in English
            2. One foreign language art song, sung in the original language, (High School Division only: or an age appropriate aria)
            3. An aria from opera, oratorio, or a musical theatre selection sung in the originallanguage
 
Entrants in the High School Division must prepare one song from each of the following categories for a total of two songs.
            1. One 20th or 21st Century art song by an American, British, or Canadian composer sung in English
            2. One foreign language art song sung in the original language, or an aria sung in the original language
 
Awards will be given at the discretion of the judges.
College Division:                       High School Division:
First Prize: $300.00                   First Prize: $200.00
Second Prize: $200.00             Second Prize: $150.00
Third Prize: $150.00                  Third Prize: $100.00
