repertoire with Pergolesi/HaydnDate: February 8, 2011 Views: 4122
I am planning a concert with my junior college choir of 20. I would like to do the Pergolesi Magnificat, the Haydn Little Organ Mass, and I am looking for an additional work, preferably a Romantic or 20th-21st century work that involves strings and maybe a few winds or trumpets. Any ideas?

Halsey Stevens Magnificat for chorus, trumpet, and strings. Mark Foster.
Holst Short Festival Te Deum chorus, orchestra (but I think can be done with strings, and piano?) Stainer or http://imslp.org/wiki/Short_Festival_Te_Deum_(Holst,_Gustav)
Each is 6-8' -- you could do both!

Dear John:
My "NUAGES" for SATB w/string qt or string orch would work. Here's the Consort Press catalog entry:
CP 12 NUAGES “Clouds” 5.5min. Score: $1.25, set of parts: $5.00
Let me know if you'd like to see a score and/or hear the piece.

Hi John,
Neukomm's MASS IN C for two treble voices (edited by me and also arranged by me for string orchestra), published by Boosey & Hawkes. This work is about 20 minutes long, lovely and lyrical, and is not very difficult for either the chorus or the orchestra.

Sorry, one question; isn't the Pergolesi magnificat actually by Francesco Durante, his teacher? Or is there more than one??
Thanks.

The so-called Pergolesi Mag is, in fact, by his teacher, Francesco Durante. There's a contrafactum Magnificat available from Barenreiter that was assembled by Malcom Bruno out of assorted fragments and incomplete works.
As for a companion piece: Michael Hurd's *Music's Praise* for chorus & strings (Novello)...it may well be a US premiere if you do it!
Hope this helps,

Not a long work, but Cantique de Jean Racine by Faure is lovely. I orchestrated it for strings and horn a number of years ago. Also the Ave Verum Corpus of Mozart is wonderful with the strings or the Kyrie and Gloria from Mass in G by Schubert is also great with strings. I also recently completed a 35 minute setting of the libretto from Handel's Messiah from the beginning to Glory to God. It is written for Strings, winds and trumpets. The solos could be sung by talented student singers.
