Elgar ‘The Dream of Gerontius’.
‘The Dream of Gerontius’ is one of the best loved choral works in the repertory, with its masterly blend of powerful choral writing, dramatic solo passages and sensitive orchestration. Like previous performances of Britten’s War Requiem and Mahler’s Eighth Symphony, this performance brings together the Newcastle Bach Choir with talented young singers and instrumentalists from Newcastle University. The soloists include two recent Samling Scholars: acclaimed South African baritone Njabulo Madlala, winner of the 2010 Kathleen Ferrier Award, and mezzo-soprano Kitty Whately, whose great-grandmother was a soloist with the Bach Choir in the 1930s. They are joined by tenor Robert Murray, a graduate of Newcastle University who has sung leading roles at English National Opera and Covent Garden.
