Volti (Robert Geary, Artistic Director) continues its 32nd season of “singing without a net” with a program of contemporary choral music, all of it composed in 2009 or later.
For this concert, Volti's 20 professional adult singers will be joined by the award-winning Piedmont East Bay Children's Choir for the world premiere of Painted Lights, a new piece by Kui Dong co-commissioned by the two groups. Also receiving its first performance will be another Volti commission, Other Floods, Tamar Diesendruck's setting of brief yet profound texts by Italian modernist poet Giuseppe Ungaretti.
Volti will give an encore performance of Ted Hearne's gripping Privilege. Hearne was the winner of Volti’s young composer competition in 2010; Privilege was premiered last season. The West Coast premiere of after stephen foster, an excerpt from Pulitzer Prize-winning composer David Lang's masterful 2009 choral work battle hymns, completes this program.
