AN EVENSONG FOR LENT AT THE PHILADELPHIA EPISCOPAL CATHEDRAL - March 20th at 4 PMDate: March 19, 2011 Views: 2334 Location: Pennsylvania, USA
During this holy season of Lent, Philadelphia Cathedral (located on 38 th Street between Chestnut and Market Street in University City) invites you to a service of Choral Evensong on Sunday, March 20 at 4 PM. The Cathedral Singers, including the newly appointed Choral Scholars, will be heard in their first Evensong service under the direction of Thomas Lloyd, Acting Director of Music, accompanied by Cathedral Organist John Andrew Bailey. The Very Rev. Judith A. Sullivan and The Rev. Andre Trevathan will serve as Officiants. Evensong had its origins in the monastic Vespers, for which the monks, who had worked all day in the fields and vineyards, put aside their tools and came together for a moment of reflection and celebration in the gathering dusk. Evensong has been one of the most treasured liturgies of the Anglican tradition mostly unchanged since the first English Prayer Book of 1549. The Lenten Evensong service music will include Herbert Howells St. Paul's Service, Victor Kalinnikov "Svjetje Tihi" (Gladsome Light/Phos Hilaron), Duke Ellington "Father Forgive" and "Lord's Prayer" from his Sacred Concerts, the Hall Johnson arrangement of the spiritual "I've been 'buked" and new liturgical recitation settings by Thomas Lloyd. A reception to follow. Complimentary parking at the lot on the southwest corner of 39th & Market Streets.
