Location: Illinois, USA
Choir type: Community Choirs
Voicing: Mixed
Wicker Park Choral Singers is venturing from its namesake neighborhood to perform a free concert at the historic St. Vincent de Paul Church in Lincoln Park on Saturday, July 9th at 8pm.  The concert, entitled Assembling the Masses, will be led by Artistic Director Mark Tomasino.  The concert will be repeated the following day at Grace Episcopal Church in Hinsdale.
Concert specifics:
  • Saturday, July 9 at 8:00 p.m. at St. Vincent de Paul Church, 1010 W. Webster Avenue, Chicago
  • Sunday, July 10 at 2:00 p.m. at Grace Episcopal Church, 120 E. 1st Street in Hinsdale, IL
Both performances are free and open to the public.
The Assembling the Masses title reflects many aspects of the concert experience.  “From a repertoire standpoint, many of the pieces are movements from liturgical mass settings, such as Poulenc's Mass in G Major and William Byrd's Mass for Four Voices,” explains Tomasino. “The selections also include a completely different meaning of the word mass with works representing nine different countries from four different continents, eight different centuries of music history, and six different languages.”
The opportunity to perform at the spacious St. Vincent de Paul also coincides nicely with the theme.  In the three year history of the ensemble, WPCS has performed all of its regular Chicago concerts at the smaller Wicker Park Lutheran Church to consistently full houses.  “Assembling a mass of people to enjoy choral music is a central tenet of our mission,” says Tomasino.   “We believe that the choral art can and should be a positive impact in more people's lives and performing in a larger space such as the beautiful St. Vincent de Paul cathedral will enable us to reach even more people for this concert.”
The concert program runs about an hour followed by a reception to meet and interact with the performers.  The repertoire includes short choral works by: Byrd, Poulenc, Machaut, Guillaume, Thompson, Palestrina, Duruflé and others.
