Central Pennsylvania’s critically acclaimed Susquehanna Chorale, directed by Linda L. Tedford, the ensemble’s founder and artistic director, will continue its 30th anniversary season by hosting the annual Youth Choral Festival on Sunday, Nov. 20, 4 p.m., at the Lower Dauphin High School in Hummelstown.
In addition to a performance by the Susquehanna Chorale, audiences will hear the Susquehanna Children’s Chorale directed by Judith Shepler, Young Women’s Chorale directed by Elizabeth Shoenfelt and Youth Choral directed by George Diehl. All were formed by Tedford as part of the original ensemble’s Educational Outreach Program. The four choirs will come together to sing the concert’s final selection, a 200-voice interpretation of the famous “Anthem of Peace,” arranged by American composer Mack Wilberg, music director of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Willberg’s “Anthem” recalls an Estonian folk melody sung during the “singing revolution” of 1987 to 1991, when hundreds of thousands of people took up song instead of arms to help liberate Estonia from the Soviet Union.
To reserve season or individual tickets for the youth, Christmas or spring concerts, call the Susquehanna Chorale at 717- 691-6036. Two- or three-ticket season subscriptions are available for $31 and $41, respectively, through Oct. 31.
The Susquehanna Chorale’s Educational Outreach Program began in 1988 and, since, has grown into four spin-off ensembles for school students in elementary through high school, including the Susquehanna Preparatory Chorale for third graders. Through focused rehearsals and performing opportunities, the program’s purpose is to pass to the next generation an appreciation and passion for fine choral literature and performance. The choirs reach hundreds of young singers every year in the Greater Harrisburg area.
