As the mid-Atlantic’s premier professional choral ensemble, The Philadelphia Singers (TPS) engages and inspires a broad range of audiences throughout the region with compelling concerts featuring performances of choral masterpieces and contemporary works. We have a 40-year history of promoting America’s rich choral heritage through both performance and music education. By embodying the highest standards of classical musicianship and providing a platform for our singers to enrich society in a wide variety of forms, we fulfill a unique and vital role in the community.
Our organization began in 1972 as a 32-voice chamber ensemble that performed an extensive repertoire ranging from Renaissance to contemporary works. During the 1980s, our group rose to prominence as we presented the Philadelphia premieres of works by Poulenc and Gershwin and world premieres of compositions by a multitude of contemporary composers. In 1991, we continued our expansion by establishing The Philadelphia Singers Chorale, a symphonic ensemble that draws from a diverse pool of over 150 talented volunteers from all over the region, supplementing our core of professional singers. The following year, esteemed conductor David Hayes succeeded our founder, Michael Korn, as Artistic Director of TPS and has guided the ensemble to even greater achievements. Among its many partnerships with local organizations, the Chorale has served as the Resident Chorus of The Philadelphia Orchestra and performed with the Pennsylvania Ballet, increasing exposure to choral music among audiences more familiar with other musical genres.
In order to connect with individuals lacking extensive experience with the arts, TPS has steadily expanded our educational offerings over the past forty years. For over a decade, we have sponsored a variety of outreach programs with an emphasis on making music education and concert experiences accessible to all students in the region. We believe that our educational offerings and exposure to performances of the highest caliber can make a difference in every child’s life, especially those who may not otherwise possess the means to attend concerts or gain an appreciation of the arts. Through our mentorship program, school outreach performances, and community sing-ins, hundreds of Philadelphia-area children have received an introduction to or a continuation of their arts education from some of the best musicians in the region. We have also fulfilled our role as a pillar of the cultural community by reaching out to seniors, presenting holiday concerts at hospitals, and donating tickets to various Philadelphia-based charities.
The Philadelphia Singers' commitment to artistic excellence and community enrichment remains the cornerstone of the organization as we continue to provide concert-goers with only the finest choral experiences, featuring challenging and exciting programs performed by a highly talented ensemble of singers.
