This is the Choirs DEBUT performance in Philadelphia.
Tenebrae, founded and directed by former King's Singer and choral expert Nigel Short, is revered by critics and audiences as Britain's finest chamber choir and makes a rare visit to the US. This twenty voice choir blends the passion of a large cathedral choir with the precision of a chamber ensemble to create a unique and enchanting sound, one which is as effective in medieval chant as in contemporary works. Performing by candlelight in the sonic splendor of the Basilica, Tenebrae creates an atmosphere of spiritual and musical reflection, where medieval chant and renaissance works are interspersed with contemporary compositions to create an ethereal mood of contemplation. The beautiful acoustics and lighting effects of a Tenebrae concert are further enhanced by the choir’s dramatic use of movement around the performing space. As singers move around their surroundings to explore all possible sound perspectives, each member of the audience is able to experience the power and intimacy of the human voice.
