Bucks County Choral Society Presents Two Christmas Concerts
Date: November 18, 2011
Location: Pennsylvania, USA
Choir type: Community Choirs
The Bucks County Choral Society, under the direction of Thomas Lloyd, will present the group’s annual Festival of Christmas Music at two Doylestown, PA venues in mid-December. The Festival of Christmas Music will have a different look this season with the introduction of a new venue for BCCS – on Saturday night, December 10 at 8:00 p.m., BCCS is pleased to debut at Our Lady of Guadalupe in Doylestown. The Choral Society then returns to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Doylestown for the group’s traditional Sunday afternoon concert on December 11 at 4:00 p.m.
The Christmas program includes the full choir, vocal soloists from the choir, organist Beth Manus, and the Tommy Shead Memorial Bell Choir of Doylestown UMC. Josef Rhineberger’s 19th century Christmas jewel The Star of Bethlehem is the featured work, along with traditional carols, Christmas favorites, sing-alongs, and more. Bell Choir preludes will begin one half-hour before concert time at each performance.
In his own lifetime Rheinberger was respected as a musician and composer without, however, achieving the highest pinnacle of fame as his contemporary, Brahms. He produced 197 opus numbers including orchestral works, chamber music, piano pieces, secular choral music, songs, operas, organ sonatas, Masses, Requiems and a Stabat Mater. His Christmas cantata Der Stern von Bethlehem, Op. 164 (The Star of Bethlehem) is considered to be among his best and most charming works, and has been performed with increasing regularity in recent years.
Recognized throughout the region as Bucks County, PA’s best large choral ensemble, the Bucks County Choral Society is an auditioned choir of one hundred voices, led by an outstanding artistic director. Singers come from all walks of life and with a range of musical skills, united in a dedication to providing a high quality choral music experience for the community.
