Date: November 29, 2011
Choir type: Chamber Choirs and Vocal Ensembles
Toronto – November 28, 2011 – Latvian Youth Choir BALSIS, under the direction of Ints Teterovskis, will present the world première of Canadian composer Peter-Anthony Togni’s Missa Liberationis at St. Saviour’s Anglican Church in Riga, Latvia on Thursday, December 22, 2011 at 8:00 pm, with Mr. Togni in attendance. The program will be repeated on Friday, December 23 at 8:00 pm and Sunday, December 25 at 11:00 pm at the same location.
Peter-Anthony Togni was commissioned to compose a new Mass by BALSIS last year as part of the choir’s “Missa a cappella” commissioning and recording project. The project’s primary goal is to facilitate the creation and recording of new a cappella Mass settings by well-known Latvian and international composers. There is currently a wealth of composers both in the Baltic States and internationally who compose exceptional sacred works and Peter-Anthony Togni is the first Canadian composer to be commissioned for this project. Additional composers who are committed to the project are Latvian composers Uģis Prauliņš, Ēriks Ešenvalds, Pēteris Vasks and Rihards Dubra, Latvian-Canadian composer Imant Raminsh and Lithuanian composer Vytautas Miškinis.
The first recording for the “Missa a cappella” project will be launched at a press conference for Mr. Togni on December 21 in Riga. The CD will feature Latvian composer Uģis Prauliņš’ Missa Rigensis and Lithuanian composer Vytautas Miškinis’ Missa Brevis Es-dur. The scores of each of these new works will be published by Musica Baltica and the CDs will be distributed internationally by Opening Day Entertainment in Canada.
Mr. Togni’s attendance at the world première of Missa Liberationis is supported in part by the Canada Council for the Arts, the Canadian Embassy in Latvia and the Music and Artistic Development Fund “BALSIS”.
