Holiday repertoire for children's choir and orchestra

My community children's chorus has been asked to perform with our local symphony orchestra at a holiday concert next December.  I am not familiar with repertoire for childrens choir and orchestra.  I would appreciate any ideas for pieces that are written for children/orchestra or ones that could be adapted.   In addition, if you know of any recordings which have arrangements for children and orchestra I'd love to hear about those too.  Thanks so much for your help!

Faure's Il est Ne
A few things by Stephen Mager (quite good if I remember right) - he has a CD out too.
Rutter did a few carols for treble voices where the mixed version orchestrations work (Star Carol, Candlelight Carol, etc.)

Dear Judith

My "Cantate Domino" (SSA accompanied) might be suitable for your concert. The vocal score is published by Santa Barbara Music Publishing www.sbmp.com (SBMP 526).

In 2009 the Concordia Youth Chorale commissioned an orchestration of the original piano accompaniment, for performance with the New Jersey State Youth Orchestra: score and parts are available direct from www.paulayres.co.uk

Orchestration: 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets in B flat, 2 bassoons, 2 trumpets in B flat, 2 horns in F, 2 trombones percussion (2 players), harp (optional), violin I, violin II, viola, cello, double bass

Judith: I have a Christmas Suite, The Season of Joy, that the San Antonio Children's Chorus sang last year with the SA Symphony that I would be glad to show you. Just send me your e-mail address. Each carol is also available separately.

Kentaro Sato's "Veni Sancte Spiritus" might be good choice (it is SSA). Here are links from his site.
Our choir performed the organ version at a large cathedral, and it was a magnificent experience.

Also, If there is solists available, Josu Elberdin has a wonderful "Maginificat."

Hi Judith,

Since it is for December, please consider my "Unending Flame", a Hanukkah piece which has been highly praised. It was commissioned by the Michigan State University Children's Choie under Mary Alice Stollak. The versions are SA/piano/clarinet, SATB/piano/clarinet plus also an orchestration which fits with either voicing. Here is a link to a youtube audio/video presentation of the piece which is quite wonderful http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJwCYXCVyUI

What people seem to enjoy about the piece is that it starts out slow and the text speaks quite beautfully of the miracle of Hannukah and the theme of hope and light, and then transforms into a very lively, fun celebration of the holiday, complete with a great klezmer-ish clarinet part. The  p/v  is published by Santa Barbara and the orchestration (strings, etc and winds/brass in twos for the most part) is available through me directly for a reasonable rental fee.

Good luck!

Jazzy Old St. Nick
Series: Secular Christmas Choral
Digital Instrumental Pak Chamb
Arranger: Chris Eastburn
Editor: Darren Dailey

Here's a jazzy, swingin' take on an old holiday favorite. The surprise pauses and clever orchestration make this the perfect novelty or concert closer. Perform it with piano, Showtrax CD or the optional chamber orchestra for extra holiday sparkle! Available separately: 2-Part, Chamber Orchestra score and parts (fl1, fl2, ob1, ob2, cl1, cl2, bn1, bn2, hn1, hn2, timp, perc1, perc2, str:88442), ShowTrax CD. Duration: ca. 2:25.

Judith:

You might consider my piece A Christmas Lullaby.  It is SA plus oboe and strings.
The poem is by Eleanor Farjeon.  The version with piano accompaniment is
published by William Thorpe.  You may look at the score of that version here.
I can send you a recording and orchestra score if you wish.  You can obtain the
orchestra parts from me.

Cheers,

Dear Judith,

'The Sleepy Shepherd Boy" is a light-hearted song I wrote for a children's choir here in the UK. It was first performed by the CBSO Children's Choir and Orchestra in Birmingham.  It's about a a little boy who keeps sheep and daydreams a lot..  There are references to David, the shepherd boy (who killed a hungry lion to protect his flock), and a humorous section where he falls asleep counting sheep! He dreams of the angel appearing to shepherds on a Bethlehem hillside, and eventually wakes up to join in with the angel choir.  The piece is mainly in unsison, with some optional 2-part bits towards the end, and is  very melodic and accessible.  The orchestration is light - mainly strings and woodwind - and there's an alternative accompaniment for piano.

As the piece is not currently published, I'd be glad to send you a piano and/or orchestral score to look at (or to anyone else who directs a children's choir).  I also have a recording, which I could send as a sound file - or see http://www.newcarols.com/downloads/Music_downloads.html - it's not a brilliant recording, but will give you a good idea of how the piece sounds.

I have two items that might be of interest:

*The Snow Lay on the Ground (Venite Adoremus)* for unis. treble (SSA last few mm.) with Messiah-sized orchestra (0-2-0-[1] 0-2-0-0; str); unpub.

*Images of Christmas* (SATB, 2-pt children; hp &/or organ) recently orchestrated for symphony orchestra (I'll have to go back & look at the exact instrumentation). The octavo was published by Thomas House/Fred Bock; don't know if it is still available or not.

I have recordings & scores of both of these works available; please contact me directly.

Hope this helps,
