Toronto Mendelssohn Choir presents free community concert, January 28, 2012
On January 28, 2012, the TMC presents a free community concert featuring the 150-voice Toronto Mendelssohn Choir, the chamber-sized Elora Festival Singers and up-and-coming conductors.  This free concert concludes the TMC’s 2012 Choral Conductors’ Symposium led by Noel Edison.  It’s a great opportunity to enjoy a wide range of music from the choral repertoire performed by two of Canada’s renowned choral groups, and to see choral conductors of the future.  The Choirs will perform choral masterpieces ranging from Byrd’s Haec Dies, through excerpts from Verdi’s Requiem and Handel’s Israel in Egypt, to contemporary works by Paul Halley and Eric Whitacre.
The concert takes place at Yorkminster Park Baptist Church on Saturday, January 28, 2012 at 3 pm.  Doors will open at 2:15 pm.  The concert is free with seating first come, first served.
The annual TMC Choral Conductors' Symposium brings together emerging conductors for an intense week of workshops with Noel Edison.  During the week the conductors work with the TMC and the Elora Festival Singers.  They conclude with the community concert where Noel Edison and the symposium conductors will each conduct different selections – large-scale works with the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir and chamber repertoire with the Elora Festival Singers.
The conductors selected to participate in the 2012 Choral Conductors’ Symposium are: Ana Alvarez, a DMA student at UofT and Conductor of the UofT Women’s Chorus; Elaine Choi, Director of Music at Timothy Eaton Memorial Church; Dominic Gregorio, a DMA student at University of Southern California and Conductor of McMaster University Choir; Jared Oaks, Associate Conductor of Ballet West in Salt Lake City, Utah; and Charles Tyler Turner, an Ed.M. in Arts student at Harvard University and Teaching Fellow with Boston Children’s Chorus.
