Allegri's Miserere, and settings of Stabat Mater by Palestrina and Domenico Scarlatti.
Music for Passiontide - the Allegri is an iconic work with its own mythology - 'stolen' by Mozart from the Sistine chapel, differing views about the validity of top C - but a piece that always attracts admiration.
The major work is Scarlatti’s ten part setting of the Stabat mater. Supported only by organ, the mediaeval poem is brought to passionate life, with voluptuous harmonies, and exciting choral exchanges. It’s a virtuoso piece, and not performed often enough.
