Poems and Prayers, the third symphony of highly acclaimed young composer Mohammed Fairouz , is a poetic Middle Eastern journey scored for solo vocalists, large mixed chorus and orchestra. The symphony incorporates ancient and modern texts ranging from the Aramaic Kaddish to modern Israeli and Arabic poetry by Mahmoud Darwish, Yehuda Amichai and Fadwa Tuqan, weaving together a narrative of shared loss and dispossession as well as hope and reconciliation. Presented by the Institute for Comparative Literature & Society of Columbia University, the concert will take place at Miller Theater.
The Young New Yorkers' Chorus, Michael Kerschner, Artistic Director, joins conductor Yoon Jae Lee and Ensemble 212. The distinguished lineup of soloists includes mezzo soprano Rachel Calloway , baritone David Kravitz and clarinetist David Krakauer .
