VOICES Chorale: "Irish Heartsong" concert with Gerry Dignan

Location: Pennsylvania, USA
Choir type: Community Choirs
Voicing: Mixed
Back by popular demand, Irish singer Gerry Dignan is the featured soloist at VOICES’ Irish concerts on March 11, 3 PM, at the Anchor Presbyterian Church, 980 Durham Rd (Rte 413), Wrightstown, PA. Called a troubadour of our time, Gerry Dignan has been moving international audiences with his heartful, spirited voice for many years. Dedicated to keep the traditional Celtic Heritage alive, he is especially adept at ballads and fast Irish "mouth music." He performs regularly in Ireland and throughout the U.S.

The 65 singers of VOICES Chorale and Mr. Dignan, accompanied by guitar, fiddle, bodhran, tin whistle, flute, and spoons, will perform various traditional Irish folk songs including Bonny Wood Green (arr. S. Hatfield), Molly Malone (arr. B. Shover), The Curragh of Kildare (arr. M. Sirett), Danny Boy (arr. J. Flummerfelt). The audience will hear some well-loved Irish classical music by Charles Villiers Stanford, a motet, Beati quorum via, and a part-song, The Blue Bird.

The premiere of a new work by Kenneth K. Guilmartin, The Music Comes Through, is based on Mr. Guilmartin’s experience visiting County Clare in Ireland, home of his forefathers. The lively, rhythmic piece for soloists, chorus, and Irish band dramatizes the time during the Irish rebellion when Irish music was outlawed by the British. Throughout Ireland, but especially in County Clare, the music went on underground and remained alive.

Also included is a Sesún, an informal part of the concert with singing and clapping, to tunes like Finnegan’s Wake and I’ll Tell My Ma. This concert is appropriate for families. Children will be invited to see the instruments up close at intermission.

Conducting are Dr. Lyn Ransom, Music Director, and Andrew Monath, Associate Conductor. Camilla Jarnot, VOICES' new accompanist, will be at the piano.
