Choral Prayers: Solace, Safety, Praise and Thanksgiving - Concert in Camarillo, CADate: April 10, 2012 Views: 1048 Location: California, USA Choir type: Chamber Choirs and Vocal Ensembles Voicing: Mixed
On Sunday, April 22nd, at 5:00 p.m., Oaks Camerata, a vocal chamber ensemble (about 30 singers) will perform a concert at St. John's Seminary Chapel, in Camarillo, California, with a program of choral prayers for solace, safety, and in praise and thanksgiving to God for the many gifts of life.
The centerpiece of this concert is the setting of Three Prayers of Dietrich Bonhoeffer by English composer Philip Moore. Bonhoeffer, the German Lutheran pastor and theologian involved in a plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler, was arrested in 1943 and was executed just 23 days before the Nazis’ surrender. His prayers exemplify Bonhoeffer’s profound and inspirational faith and his outlook on the endurance of suffering and difficulties in life. Also included in the program are thematically similar works by Franco-Flemish Renaissance composer Orlando de Lassus, English Romantic composer Charles Villiers Stanford, and twentieth-century French composers Maurice Duruflé and Olivier Messiaen.
