Whot: The University Chorus of the University of California, Berkeley presents their Spring concert entitled "INVASIONS!" under the direction of Guest Director, Matthew Oltman
When: Saturday, April 21. 8pm
Where: Hertz Hall near the intersection of Bancroft and College in Berkeley, CA
What: Janequin, "La Guerre"; Jerusalem, "Mass in F"; Handel "Utrecht Jubilate" and "Zadok the Priest"
The repertoire explores three different types of invasions: military, religious and cultural. The military invasion is represented by Janequin's famous "La Guerre" which commemorates the 1515 battle of Marignano. The invasion of a new religion is represented by the modern premiere of Ignacio Jerusalem's "Mass in F," written in the mid-1700's for cathedral in Mexico City. Musicologist and editor, Craig Russell, will be on hand adding his skill as a guitarist to the playfully orchestrated mass. The cultural invasion is represented by Handel's "Utrecht Jubilate" and "Zadok the Priest." Handel's conquest of the English musical scene at the time when the British crown was assumed by the German-born George I is the stuff of legend. The Utrecht Jubilate was his first commission upon taking up residence on the island and Zadok the Priest has the distinction of being sung at every single British coronation since its composition in 1727.
