Producing a CD for saleDate: April 25, 2012 Views: 2316
I am seeking information regarding licensing needed to produce a CD for sale. Having viewed the Harry Fox website, it appears (for certain) we need to obtain a 'mechanical license'. What about permission from the arranger/publisher? Is that yet another 'license' we need to obtain? Example: 'What a Wonderful World', music by Bob Thiele. This appears on the HF site. The arranger is Mark Hayes, publisher: Hal Leonard. Seems as though one must contact the publisher for permission/license, yes? Sure there is an additional fee for this, yes?
As I've searched Choralnet and not found any helpful posts, would really appreciate anybody who can 'walk me through the process'. Our first attempt at this!
Many Thanks,
Michael Main, Artistic Director

From what I recall, paying the fee to HF stands as the agency
doing the work for you, whether it's to the composer, arranger or
whatever.

Harry Fox acts as the agent for the copyright holder(s). If you've licensed with them they'll distribute the money (minus a small fee, of course) to the composer, arranger, publisher, etc. and you can focus on getting people to buy your CD.

Both of these replies are correct. Arrangers get nothing in
the mechanical realm. All recording rights stay with the original
song. Harry Fox is all you need to do.

I believe Harry Fox passes the fee on to the buyer, meaning us. The bill from Harry Fox has a processing fee added to it that we pay. Do they also take a fee from the publishers?
