SINGERS WANTED FOR SARATOGA CHORAL FESTIVAL’s 2012 SEASON!

May 6, 2012

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. — The Saratoga Choral Festival seeks experienced choral singers with good sight-reading and vocal abilities for its twelfth season. Singers will meet for rehearsals over a three-week period in Saratoga Springs beginning Thursday, July 5th, and will present the moving Stabat Mater for chorus and orchestra by English composer Karl Jenkins and Handel’s Coronation Anthem: Let Thy Hand Be Strengthened for chorus and orchestra at the SPA LITTLE THEATER on Friday, July 27th, at 8:00 p.m.

Jenkins made his mark in the world as a media composer writing commercial music for Levi’s, British Airways, Renault, Tag Heuer, Pepsi as well as US/global campaigns for De Beers and Delta Airlines. For Delta he wrote the famous song Adiemus that accompanied the jet in flight. After this period, his return to the music mainstream was initially marked by the success of the Adiemus project. Adiemus combined the ‘classical’ with ethnic vocal sounds and percussion with an invented language and topped classical and ‘pop’ charts around the world. His Armed Man: A Mass For Peace alone has been performed nearly 1000 times in 20 different countries since the CD was released while his recorded output has resulted in seventeen gold and platinum disc awards. Since its premiere in 2008, the distinctive Stabat Mater has had over 150 performances worldwide. Added to the traditional Stabat Mater prayer is an ingenious use of Arabic, Aramaic, Hebrew & Greek sung prayer accompanied by Middle Eastern percussion instruments.
The Saratoga Choral Festival began in the summer of 2001. Previous seasons have featured the requiems by Fauré, Duruflé, and Mozart (repeated in October 2001 as a benefit for the Red Cross and victims of 9/11), Bach’s Magnificat (featuring members of the Philadelphia Orchestra), Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass, Vaughan Williams’ Dona Nobis Pacem, Handel’s Dixit Dominus, Rutter Gloria, Mozart’s Coronation Mass, a premiere of a new edition of Gretchaninov’s Liturgia Domestica and the Bloch Sacred Service with Cantor Robert Abelson in 2011. In August of 2004, the chorus finally realized its dream of performing with the Philadelphia orchestra in a critically acclaimed performance of the Mahler 3rd Symphony with the Harlem Boys Choir under the direction of Charles Dutoit at SPAC. This is the seventh season of performances at the Little Theater located in the heart of SPA State Park. The Festival joins the list of illustrious performances presented there during the summer such as Opera Saratoga and the Saratoga Chamber Music Festival.

Directing the Choir will be Dr. Andrea Goodman who currently serves as the director of the Cantilena Chamber Choir and the Northern Berkshire Chorale in Western Massachusetts. She has been a visiting professor of conducting at the New England Conservatory of Music, and has served as Director of Choruses at Skidmore College and New York University.
