Recent Italian Composers????Date: May 15, 2012 Views: 3402
I am looking into the choral composers that have most recently come out of Italy. I looked in the book Choral Repertoire as a primary soruce to start my serach. These are the composers i have found:
1. Ottorino Respighi (1879-1936)--Lauda per la nativita del Signore
2. Ildebrando Pizzetti (1800-1968)--Tre composizione corali
3. Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco (1895-1968)-- Romancero gitano; The Fiery Furnace
4. Luigi Dallapiccola (1904-1975)-- Canti di prigionia
5. Goffredo Petrassi (1904-2003)-- Nonsense; Tre cori sacri; Salmo IX
6. Luigi Nono (1924-1990)-- Il canto sospeso; Prometeo
7. Luciano Berio (1925-2003)-- Coro; Magnificat
I would appreciate any other additions to my list!

Go to Musica Database ( http://www.musicanet.org ), access to "Other searches" and use the "detailed" search form of the composers' file (29,000 composers referenced). There, ask for Italy as a country, and 21st century (or 20th century). You can add other search criteria if you want, such as Gender, town of birth, year of birth, etc...
Happy search in Musica

The choral works of Italian-Swiss composer Ivo Antognini (http://www.choralnet.org/view/user/5157) have been getting a lot of attention.

Go here on ChoralNet: http://www.choralnet.org/list/resource/1889 to see a list of individual living composers' websites, all accompanied by the composers' countries of residence in parentheses. I quickly scanned the list and saw a few in Italy. This would definitely fit your "...most recently..." criteria! (This list is found under the "Resources" tab at the top of the ChoralNet home page.)

You might want to read my article "The Rebirth of Choral Music in Italy," which appeared in the Winter 1990 issue of the American Choral Review.

Sandro Gorli wrote a beautiful Requiem that was recorded 15 years ago. I don't know anthing else about him.

Nino Rota wrote choral music that is available for
performance. I am much more familiar with his instrumental music
but it might be fun to unearth a wonderful little gem from his
choral pieces. As a whole, I think his music is undervalued because
of his more commercial successes.
