THINK LIKE A COMPOSER: BRINGING MIND, BODY, AND SPIRIT TO CHORAL REHEARSAL AND PERFORMANCE. Janet Galván, guest composer and clinician Stephen Hatfield, and support faculty will lead this workshop. The workshop will involve exploration of strategies to lead more engaging rehearsals and performances through a more complete understanding of score study and relating that study to what happens in rehearsal. Participants will learn and refine a variety of rehearsal techniques to engage students in rehearsals, which lead to greater musical understanding, more enthusiastic singing, and enhanced performances. Additionally, the instructors will present ways to enhance the quality and variety of repertoire, create a truly musical environment, and improve the sound of the singers. Repertoire will feature distinctive works for all levels (easy to difficult) from several styles and periods for treble voices, mixed choirs, and young men's choruses. Participants will have the opportunity to conduct in a master class, leading an ensemble featuring members of the Ithaca Children's Choir the Michigan State University Children's Choir (Kristin Zaryski, conductor), and the Sussex County Children's Chorus (Deborah Mello, conductor). More artistic and efficient use of gesture will be addressed.
