William Dawson

Hi all --

I am studying William Dawson and his effect on choral music and Negro spirituals. Does anyone hold any recordings of Mr. Dawson's lectures from the 1980s? Or, perhaps transcripsts or notes from any of his presentations? He spoke at many ACDA regional conventions in the 80s, and I am hoping that someone might have a lead for me.

Thanks so much!

I would check with Tuskegee Instutute in Tuskegee Alabama to see what their archives might hold.  Dr. Wayne Barr (an active ACDA member) is music director there now.

All the best in your project.   Tim Banks

Dawson's family donated 119 boxes of his papers to Emory University several years ago.  Check out their collection at http://larson.library.emory.edu/dawson/web/main/intro

I would be surprised if they don't have something you are looking for.

Hi Vernon,

I just did a paper last year on William Dawson's "Negro Folk Symphony" and Cyrillus Kreek's Sacred Requiem.  (They both use folk melodies and were composing around the same time.)  I found the online information from Emory invaluable.  If you'd like I'd be happy to send you a copy of the paper.
