The Music Ministry of the Congregational Church of San Mateo (CCSM) presents the one-act opera Amahl and the Night Visitors by Gian-Carlo Menotti, performed by the church’s Chancel Choir in CCSM’s Kloss Hall.
There will be two performances on Sunday, December 16 at 9:00 am and at 10:30 am. Entry is free and an offering will be collected. There will also be an open dress rehearsal on Thursday, December 13 at 7:00 pm. Conductor Dr. Kathleen McGuire said: “I love this opera. The music is so beautiful, and it’s a very human story. Everyone can really take something from it regardless of his or her age, background, or religious belief.” Commissioned by NBC and premiered on television December 24, 1951, Menotti devised a timeless story - with an English libretto - of the three magi en route to Bethlehem. Weary after walking many miles, the kings come upon a modest hut inhabited by a poor woman and her son, Amahl, a crippled boy. The magi relate to Amahl and his mother the reason for their journey: to visit a very special baby who will bring peace to the world. Inspired, Amahl finds a way to provide a generous gift for the child that will change their lives forever. A 16-piece orchestra will accompany the opera. The cast and orchestra members are almost entirely from our own CCSM congregation. In addition to the opera, there will be traditional carol singing. The Congregational Church of San Mateo, located at 225 Tilton Avenue at the corner of San Mateo Drive, was founded in 1864 when San Mateo was a little village of 400 people. With a diverse and inclusive congregation now exceeding 600, CCSM opens its doors to everyone: "Whoever you are, wherever you are on life's journey, you are welcome here."
