I am a new middle school choral director, although I'm not new to choral groups, teaching, or to music. I taught English for 14 years, piano for several, and have been directing church choir for about 10. My issue is how do I help individuals in the middle school classroom? It deals with behavior and management as much as anything, I'm sure. I can give lots of instruction in reading music, adding dynamics, breathing, etc., as a choir unit, but hearing and addressing individuals and sound is beyond me at this point. I have a lot of kids who aren't in the class for the right reasons and a lot of behavior issues to go with it. Right now, I'm just trying to keep my head above water with a couple of classes for those reasons. How do I make it interesting for kids who don't really want to be there, challenging for those with ability, and teach singing techniques to the mix? Best practice suggestions would be fabulous! (And, um, my administrator's suggestions are to sing more stuff that they like, aka pop stuff. I probably will do one in each class but....)
