The Dessoff Choirs present "Life of a Song" Masterclass

Wordplay, the mid-winter festival presented by The Dessoff Choirs and Music Director, Christopher Shepard continues on Saturday, February 9 at 2pm with a public master class, Life of a Song, at the Ripley-Grier Studios, 520 Eighth Avenue. This master class offers a behind the scenes look at writing a musical. Award-winning composer Anna K. Jacobs and lyricist Bill Nelson discuss and share excerpts from their musical-in-progress, Harmony, Kansas. The team will provide artistic guidance to several aspiring composers, made up of students and young professional singer-songwriters, who were selected to present their pieces. Pieces written by the up-and-coming composers will be performed by members of The Dessoff Choirs.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Anna K. Jacobs, composer
Award-winning composer Anna K. Jacobs wrote the music for POP!, Harmony, Kansas, and Stella and the Moon Man. Her songs and musicals have been widely produced and performed here and abroad and her choral works have been commissioned and performed by choirs across the U.S. and Australia. She is a 2010–11 Dramatists Guild Fellow, a recipient of Dame Joan Sutherland Fund and Anna Sosenko Assist Trust grants, and has been an Artist in Residence at New Dramatists, Barrington Stage Company, CAP21, Bundanon Trust, and Hotchkiss Summer Portals.
Bill Nelson, lyricist
Bill Nelson is a playwright/bookwriter/lyricist. With composer Anna K. Jacobs he wrote Harmony, Kansas. He also wrote Bill Nelson’s All-Male Revue – a revue conceived and directed by William Finn. His songs have been presented at cabarets around the world, including William Finn’s Songs by Ridiculously Talented Composers and New York Theatre Barn’s The Oh, So Sexy Songs of Bill Nelson. He has penned scripts for Imagination Studio and Heartland Men’s Chorus. He’s a 2010-11 Dramatists Guild Fellow, and member of the BMI Workshop.
