Bucks County Choral Society & Riverside Symphonia Bring Monumental Musical Work
to Our Lady of Guadalupe
The Bucks County Choral Society, under the direction of artistic director Thomas Lloyd, presents Giuseppe Verdi’s Requiem, considered by many to be the composer’s masterpiece, with internationally acclaimed soloists and the Riverside Symphonia on Sunday afternoon, April 7 at 4:00 p.m., at our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Doylestown, PA.
For this rare Bucks County performance, the one hundred-voice Choral Society and the top flight instrumental musicians of the Riverside Symphonia, are joined by outstanding vocal soloists, Including soprano Barbara Shirvis, mezzo-soprano Suzanne DuPlantis, tenor William Davenport, and baritone Stephen Powell.
The words “Libera me”, which translate as “liberate me!” or “set me free!” are at the heart of Verdi’s basic premise for the Requiem. Verdi chose to set this text from the burial Mass as his contribution to a multi-composer requiem he attempted to organize as a national tribute to composer Gioachimo Rossini, which was never performed. However, Verdi revisited the idea of turning his single movement into a complete work – his Requiem - in 1874, this time to honor the memory of the great Italian literary figure Alessandro Manzoni.
“BCCS is pleased and proud to be able to present this masterwork, with outstanding vocal soloists and the best orchestra in the area,” notes Lloyd. “Verdi’s Requiem is truly one of the high points of Western classical and choral music, and our new home at Our Lady of Guadalupe has given us a tremendous environment in which to perform and appreciate this tumultuous, deeply moving, spiritual music.”
Recognized throughout the region as Bucks County’s best large choral ensemble, the Bucks County Choral Society is an auditioned choir of one hundred voices, led by an outstanding artistic director. Singers come from all walks of life and with a range of musical skills, united in a dedication to providing a high quality choral music experience for the community.
